Maurice Claude Payne was born on 27th September 1911 (Mildenhall Q4-1911 4A:1722), son of John William and Sarah PAYNE (née LARGE ).

In the 1939 register he was a carpenter/coffin maker,at West Street, Mildenhall with his father John W [4-8-1889] labourer, and mother Sarah J [28-7-1884]


The 8th Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders were converted to an Artillery Regiment, becoming the 100th Light Anti-Aircraft/Anti Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery and served with 2nd Infantry Division in Burma. They were involved in the battles at Kohima.

Six of the unit died that day, but the other 5 are buried in Kohima.
